CHAPTER TWELVE

Trystan slammed the towels down on the counter. Her head felt like it would explode any second. She’d done nine treatments in ten hours, she was exhausted, and none of the players was C.J.

“Damn it all to hell.”

“I see your humor isn’t improving.”

Trystan’s head snapped up. “Bee! What’re you doing here?”

Becca shrugged. “You wouldn’t come to me, so I figured if I wanted to see you, I’d better come to you.”

Trystan enveloped her best friend in a bear hug. She stepped back and gave Becca an appraising glance. “You look great.”

“Yeah? Well, you don’t.”

Trystan nearly choked. “Next time, tell me what you really think.”

“I calls ‘em like I sees ‘em, champ. You look awful.”

Trystan glared at Becca and shrugged. ‘Tow treat all these whining women and tell me howyow feel at the end of the day.”

Becca held up her hands in a gesture of surrender. “No, thank you. I’m sure it’s no picnic.”

“No, it’s not.”

“I’m not arguing with you, Trys, so why the defensiveness?”

“I’m not being defensive,” Trystan snapped.

“Hello?” Becca raised her eyebrows.

Trystan clamped her mouth shut and went back to tidying the treatment area.

Becca tried a different tack. “I’m glad to see you, too, Trys. Thanks for the warm welcome. Where am I staying? Thanks for asking. I’m staying at the host hotel, where I assumed you’d be staying, too.” Becca kept up the monologue. “Dinner? I’d love to have dinner with you. What a splendid offer. Maybe you could introduce me to C.J. Winslow.”

An arrow pierced Trystan’s chest at the mention of C.J.’s name, and she spun around, ready to lash out. Her face was a mask of fury. When she saw Becca’s knowing expression, she changed her mind and stalked out of the room.

Becca threw her hands up in the air and followed. “Trys? Hey, slow down.”

“Why, so you can poke at me some more?”

“Poke at you?”

“C.J. isn’t here, okay? Are you satisfied?” Trystan felt as if her pain was laid bare for everyone to see.

“Easy, tiger. I was just asking a question.”

“The hell you were. You were digging.”

“Okay, 1 admit—1 want to know what’s going on. Last time I talked to you, I couldn’t even bring her name up. Then I see you and you’re a mess. Trystan, I’m worried about you. I’ve never seen you look out of sorts the way you do now.”

“I appreciate your concern, but I’m fine,” Trystan said, gritting her teeth.

“Could’ve fooled me,” Becca mumbled. Out loud, she said, “Will you have dinner with me?”

Trystan took a deep, centering breath and shoved aside her foul mood. “Of course. I’m really glad you’re here, Bee.”

“Ah, there’s my best friend. How much longer are you going to be here? I’m starving.”

“When aren’t you?” Trystan asked, laughing at Becca’s predictability.

“Very funny. Answer the question.”

“Three minutes, I promise. Then 1 just have to make one phone call before we go.”

Becca tapped her watch. “You’re on the clock, Lightfoot. Better hustle.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Trystan saluted. She finished straightening up, went in her office, closed the door, and picked up the phone.
